New Book
I disagree with the idea that if you are in a position of power than you are happy, because even if you have power doesn't mean you have a nice loving family or great friends. I am not saying that all powerful people are sad, but having a lot of power might put a lot of stress into one person. A lot of people who have little to no power are much more happy than the people who have power and everything they want. In the end I think that you can be happy with a lot of power and control, but that is not what makes you automatically happy.
I strongly agree with the statement of everyone is capable of lying, betrayal, and violence, which are basic parts of human nature. I think that everyone is born with these traits, and that they are changeable at a young age. Personally I think that no one has never lied, because everyone has tried to get away with something by lying to the person accusing them of it. I think that One lie leads to another lie, because you have to cover up your first lie. Overall I think that these are characteristics that everyone is born with.

Hits and Misses
This year we have done a lot of different writing topics. My favorite one we wrote was the one on the Lord of The Flies. My least favorite piece of writing we have done this year was the essay on our chosen topics about social studies. I feel like I could have learned more while doing this project, but all of the things we had to do with the sources made it very confusing. I think I was focusing to much on just the writing part of the project, and wasn't able to learn much along the way, because I was thinking how I was going to say thing on my paper.
The reason I liked doing the Lord of The Flies paper is because of how good the book was. The book was very interesting and had many things that you had to pay close attention to or you would have missed it. This made it easy for me to make my paper long enough, and did not have to create bad sentences to lengthen the paper. Overall I think this year of writing has been very good.

My Name
Most people would agree that I have a very unusual name. My first name, Jett, comes from the old oil movie named Giant starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson. James Dean plays Jett Rink in the movie. This movie is my dad's favorite movie of all time. He always said that if he had a son that he would name him Jett.
Luckily, my mom loved the name. Before I was born, my grandmother used to say "I've got to learn to say his name without laughing". Gradually, with time, she did learn to say my name without laughing. She actually ended up loving my name and said that she cannot imagine me having any name other than Jett. I like my name and it is a very good conversation piece!

Strategies
We are currently reading Purple Hibiscus which is a very challenging book. I am no the greatest reader, and do not like to read very much. Since I am not a good reader I had to find new strategies to get through the book faster. My first idea was to just read aloud instead of silently. This technique actually slowed me down so I had to come up with a new strategy.
The new technique I came up with was to read the material more carefully. This allowed me to not have to reread any sentences which sped my reading up in the long run. This technique helped me understand and finish the book a lot faster. Also this technique allowed me to make better annotations in my book. Overall this technique could help anyone who has trouble reading quick or understanding what they are reading.

Drug Testing Welfare Recipients
Drug Test All of Us
In his article Drug Test All of Us, Adam Chodorow describes the different ideas behind whether the United States should drug test the recipients of welfare. Chodorow begins by saying the 15 states have recently passed laws that require people who receive welfare to be drug tested. He says that these laws have been said to be "an attempt to demonize the poor." Chodorow also notes that although the government wants to be sure that the welfare money is not used for drugs, he says that other forms of federal aid, such as farmers and businesses, are not required to be drug tested. He questions whether this shows that the government is only trying to make the poor seem like bad people.
I agree with what Chodorow is saying, even though I do not know much about how federal aid programs work. I understand that the government wants to make sure that the money that they give is used for things such as food and housing and not for drugs, but I think that it is unfair to assume that the people receiving help do drugs. I don't think that the government should be demonizing people who need help. Also, I am not sure how much drug tests cost, but I think that they are expensive. I don't think that the money spent on drug tests would be worth it in the long run. It is unfair to assume that only people of lower socioeconomic status do drugs and therefore are worthy of having drug tests, since different types of recipients of federal aid, that are typically a higher class, are not drug tested. I chose this topic because my sister was talking about how Arizona spent millions of dollars on drug testing welfare recipients, and they only found one person who tested positive. I thought that it was ridiculous and I wanted to learn more about it. I searched "drug testing welfare recipients" on Google, and found a reliable news source.

Learning Reflection
I have learned a lot about myself as a student this year. This year I have learned to use my study hall a lot more wisely. In 8th grade I did not use my flex time wisely, which caused me to have a lot of homework every night. This year, and especially this past quarter I have used my study hall to complete most of my homework. Also this year I have learned a more efficient way of doing homework.
Last year I would sit at the dinner table to do homework every night. I thought this was a good place, but there was too much noise and disruptions. Now I have been doing all of my homework either in study hall, or in my room where it is more quiet. The final thing I have learned about myself this year is that I study a lot better with someone else. Previously I would study by myself, which was not very effective. This year I now study with my friends, on facetime or in person. Overall I have learned about about myself this year.

I love animals. We have three dogs and one cat. Bandit was the first dog that we got. We adopted him from Petco when he was just a baby and now he is about 10 years old. He barely had any hair when we got him because he had so many fleas. He had a brother that looked just like him and his name was A.J. I often wonder what happened to A.J. and if he has had a good life. Bandit is my sister's favorite dog. A few years after we got Bandit, we found Nacho. Nacho showed up at our doorstep and never left! Nacho is chihuahua and he has a cataract in one eye. He is around 13 years old now and he is my mom's favorite dog. Bella is our biggest dog. She is a white German Shepard and she is about 7 years old. Someone dropped her off at our barn and we took her in. She had heart worms really bad and my mom had her treated by the veterinarian. She is healthy now and she is my favorite dog.
Ricky's cat had a litter of kittens and I loved playing with these kittens. I begged my mom for one of the kittens and she gave me one for my 14th birthday. I named her Gizmo and we call her Gizzy. Gizzy is an indoor cat that loves to sleep. Animals make me happy because they are always happy to see me and they love to play!

Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is one of the biggest holidays in my family. Every year my dad and his family would have a float in a very big parade. One year when I was still about 11 years old my dad made a huge bag with lots of beads, and other stuff. He promised that he would throw it to me once his float passed where I was standing, and he kept that promise and threw it right to me. The problem with that was that I was not looking, so the bag hit me right in the head.
Since the bag was full with heavy beads, it knocked me out. After some lady saw me she decided to not make sure I was okay, or even breathings, she just picked up the bag and walked off. Once my mom made sure I was okay she chased after the other lady and told her to give me back my bag. The lady refused to do so, until we told her that it had my name on the side of it since my dad wrote it. Overall Mardi Gras is one of my favorite Holidays.

Song Analysis
Heathens by Twenty One Pilots

"Wait for them to ask you who you know" In this part of the song I noticed that they used assonance. In this line there is a repetition of the "oo" sound. The use of assonance in this song helps it flow better. Another technique this song displays is Sibilance. IN the line "Why'd you come, you knew you should have stayed" he uses Sibilance. I think he uses this to help the song have a more creepy feeling.
The final technique I noticed the singer using was consonance. In the line "Yeah, I trust issues, not to mention" he repeats the letter T. I think the singer uses this to keep the song flowing well. The writer uses this technique to create a very sharp sounding line. Also this could have just been a coincidence, and the writer didn't know about it.

Poem
So many people view sports as the light of the world,
the big game apparently brings the people together
but are we really together when we are cheering for opposing teams
when we speak hateful words to those in the opposing colors
do they really bring us together?
Riots break out when your favorite team loses
Athletes do drugs
so that they will not let down their fans
by allowing their competitors defeat them
is this really together?

Zach Potterman was contending in a race, with 49 other people. It costs 15 dollars for one person to join, and every time someone did the monetary award got higher and higher. The goal of the race was to build the fastest car when pushed down a hill. Zach made a car the perfect size for himself out of wood. Zach decided to implicate metal wheels, because he thought they would make him go faster.
On the final day to prepare for the race he painted his car his favorite colors, purple, yellow, and red. The next day was very exiting for Zach because it was race day. While he was there Zach saw one of his friends from school, and they talked for a while, and before they went separate ways his friend promised that he would beat Zach. Once they finally lined up to go down the hill, everyone got in their car, and then it started. Zach was in second behind his friend, until his friend hit a little bump in the ground which gave Zach the lead. In the final stretch of the race something tragic happened, one of Zach's front wheel fell off, but he still one just because his car was a little longer than his friends.

Research Project
The first skill that I have learned by working on this project is to work ahead. This research project has made me learn to do some work before the night before. Before we did this project I would always wait till the day before, but now I work ahead. The other skill I learned from this paper is to not try and rush things. If I try to hurry up and finish things it normally takes me longer to go back and fix all of the mistakes.
The one thing that I had trouble with for this project was sources. Finding reliable sources with a lot of information is harder than it sounds. I personally really do not like using databases to find these sources. Most of the sources I found on databases were really old, and did not have a lot of information. So far sources have been the only trouble I have ran into.

Reading Respose
Currently we are reading the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This book is written in the perspective of an Indian boy. The boy is named Junior, and is in a very poor family. The boy decides to switch school, to the most dangerous one he could go to. Some days Junior has to walk 22 miles to get to school, and once he does get there a bunch of kids pick on him. Later in the story Junior impresses a girl named Penelope, and they start talking more and more.
So far this book has been a great read. I definitely think events like this could happen today. While reading this book it makes me feel really engaged, and wanting to keep reading. While other books are so boring that I never want to read them. Overall this has been a very good book so far.

Soccer season
Every year for the past 4 years I have played school soccer. During soccer season I always had a ton of fun with all of my classmates. Every year we have done very well in the games. My favorite season was probably this year because of how good we were. This season we only lost 2 games, and both of them were to catholic high.
My favorite part of this past season was the St. Michaels tournament. In this tournament we played 3 games, and then made it to the final. In the finals we lost to Catholic High, who used some of their varsity players. The most memorable part of that weekend was winning are final game to make it to the finals. Overall soccer is a really fun sport to play during Winter.

Reading Response
We have been reading the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and so far I have really enjoyed it. This is one of the best books in the recent history. When I started reading I thought it would be a very boring book, but so far it has been very intriguing. The writer uses a lot of vivid details, that makes it a lot better to read.
My favorite part about this book is the drawings that the author uses. The drawings in this book are like a kid drew, but they are still very good. The pictures add a lot to the book, showing the reader what they mean. I also really enjoy the pictures, because I don't really like to read, and this makes me want to get to the next page. So far I am really enjoying this book

My Topic
My topic for the research project is about the Functions of the Roman Gods. This topic is important because most people only know about Greek Mythology. From doing research I learned that the Romans developed their religion off of the Greeks, when they conquered them. Also this research is very interesting because of all the great stories, and Gods. This topic is also interesting because many of the stories are made up because the historians would write anything they hear about.
Jupiter was arguably the most significant Roman God. There was thousands of temples for Jupiter in Ancient Rome, for all of the citizens to worship at. Also Jupiter was the head God, and ruled over everyone with his power and lightning bolt. Another significant God was Juno, The wife of Jupiter. Juno was very important to the women of Rome. They worshipped her more than a lot of the other gods, because she fought for the education of girls. Overall this research topic is really interesting.

What I Learned
The first semester of high school was very hard. While struggling to study for all of the test I learned that I study best by studying a little at a time. Before any test I would set time periods to study. This study strategy really helped me at the end of the semester, and for exams.
I will continue to use this strategy to help me with the end of my first year in high school. This semester I am striving to do even better than last semester. Without this study strategy I don't think the first semester would have gone as well as it did. I hope that this semester's exams will be really easy with this study tool. Overall this strategy helped me with the first semester, and will continue to help for the rest of the year.

Over Christmas break I had lots of fun with my family, and neighbors. Every year on Christmas Eve we go across the street to my neighbors house. While we are there we eat breakfast, and watch Christmas movie. The main thing we do though is give presents to each other. Since I drew one of my neighbors I decided to buy him a bunch of fishing stuff, since he loves to fish.
On Christmas Eve night every year my Cousins come over. Every year since I was 5 we have ate spaghetti each night. After every one is done eating we open these small little packs, which have a bunch of random items in them. Once everyone is done playing with their games we open presents. Overall Christmas is the best time of the year.

Research
So far my research project has been going pretty well. I found all of the sources I needed very quickly. The start of the annotation wasn't to bad, but then I still need to do three before the end of that night. Once I finally finished I was really happy, but then I learned we had to make notecards. Even though the notecards are kind of hard I think I will be able to get them done because of all the time we have to work on them.
The good thing about this project is that we have both Social Studies and English to work on it. If we didn't get those two class periods I don't think I would be able to finish. We just started working on notecards, and they are already due tomorrow night. The hard part about these notecards is that we have to do 35 of them! Even though this project has been pretty hard I think it will turn out to be okay.
